Perspectives

Immigration: Here on Long Island the immigration question centers on Spanish immigrants and not Canadians. Maybe it's different in Michigan or Oregon or Las Vegas, but here just outside of New York City it's our former neighbors from Mexico and points south that we run into on a daily basis at the local 7-11. Many of my neighbors are very upset by their presence because they obliterate the local zoning laws, laws that deprive their own children from being able to afford to live here themselves. Of course the children could live here if they and their parents just did what our spanish speaking neighbors did, live together in one household. Anyway that doesn't seem likely and so we have to address the questions of amnesty, worker permits, citizenship and the like. Questions that have no answers that would appeal to a majority of my fellow Americans.
But I think there is a proposed solution that needs some discussion: Statehood for Mexico.
Imagine Mexico as the 51st state. All of its citizens would pay into Social Security and Medicare. They would all pay Federal Income taxes. The money sent from New York to Mexico city would not only earn money in Mexican banks but be taxed by Uncle Sam. All the jobs that went from Detroit to Mexico would be taxed by Uncle Sam. We wouldn't need a fence between Mexico and the US. Now I am sure there are a few disadvantages. For one, Mr. Fox would only be a Governor and not a President, for another we would have to check to see where our bottled spring water was coming from. But there's always a price to pay for real progress. Viva America!
